Bobby Charlton had for so long lead on 49 goals, somehow seeing off the prolific Gary Lineker, who famously missed a penalty against Brazil to equal the record.

Rooney had scored a spot kick v San Marino on Saturday to equal Charlton and then made it 50with a second half strike against Switzerland after Harry Kane’s opener. Whatever you think of Rooney, it is an incredible achievement. Especially when you consider he will likely be Manchester United’s all-time top goal scorer sometime in the coming 12 months as well.

And, Rooney should also have plenty more games to increase his 50-goal tally with potentially two more tournaments to take part in.

All Rooney has to do now, is actually perform at Euro 2016 or World Cup 2018 to convince any remaining doubters.
